Services - Wireless Network FAQ

The use of our public computers and public wireless access are governed by the SCL Computer Use Policy.

Connection tips

Most PCs will detect and connect to our wifi network automatically, so try connecting before you make any changes to your settings. If you are using Windows XP, and the auto-detect did not connect, try the following:

From the Taskbar (next to the clock):
  • Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon (looks like a computer with broadcasting lines)

  • Click on View Available Wireless Networks

  • Select Library-Public network and click on Connect

  • In some cases, your computer may give you a warning because the library's network is unsecured and unencrypted. For more information, please see the below question: What about virus protection and security? If you do not select "Connect Anyway," you will not be able to use the wireless.

Make sure your laptop or wireless device is ready to receive wireless signals. Sometimes there is a physical switch that can be turned on and off, while other devices have a toggle button or function-keystroke action that can be taken. Most devices have a light or an icon that shows you when wireless detection is working.

Use the software that came with your wireless card to check your configuration settings and verify a connection to the SCL WiFi

  • SSID (Network Name) = Library-Public
  • Mode or Network Type = Infrastructure or Access Point (Do NOT use Ad-Hoc)

Take a look around - if others are connecting, it may be your wireless card or device causing the problem, in which case, contact the manufacturer for support.

It may be that our wireless network needs to be re-booted. If nobody is connected, and you cannot see the Library-Public network, please see the Information Desk for help.

Q: How do I use the SCL WiFi from the library?

Bring your own windows-based laptop computer or other wireless device or sign out one of ours at the Information Desk. Your device must have built-in WiFi capability or an installed WiFi network card - the library does not provide wireless cards, and does not guarantee that your equipment will be compatible with our network, although most PCs will detect and connect automatically. Once connected, you should be able to use whatever online software is normally available to you.

Q: Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

No, the library's public wireless network is open to all visitors. No special encryption settings, user names or passwords are required. Most PCs will detect and connect to our network automatically. See our Connection Tips for more information about how to help your device detect our settings.

Q: What are the hours for this service?

Wireless access is available whenever Strathcona County Library is open, and shuts down along with the rest of our computers. Please see our Hours & Closures for details.

Q: When I access my library account or subscription databases, will I still have to use my library card barcode and PIN#?

Whenever you check your library account you will need to log in using your library card barcode and PIN#. This is true even on our wireless network, or on a library catalogue station.

For using subscription databases, you may not need to enter your library account # or PIN. In some cases, databases will recognize our devices on our wireless as internal computers and will not ask for your card information.

Q: When using my own equipment, do I still have to comply with the Internet Access rules for the Library?

Yes. Whenever you are using the services available through Strathcona County Library, you are expected to comply with the terms set out in our Computer & Internet Use Guidelines, and be aware of the library's Access to Electronic Resources policy (pdf).

Q: Can the library help me configure my computer?

No. You are responsible for knowing how to configure whatever equipment you choose to bring in with you. Strathcona County Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your equipment settings. If you need assistance with your auto detect or other network setting functions, we suggest you contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software. See our Connection Tips for more information about how to help your device detect our settings. Library staff cannot provide any help beyond what is listed on this FAQ page.

Q: What about virus protection and security?

You are responsible for the maintenance of your own equipment, and this extends to updating virus protection and security. Strathcona County Library cannot be responsible for damages incurred due incorrect, insufficient, or incomplete security settings or inadequate or non-current virus protection. Wireless users must assume all risks associated with this service.

Q: Can I print wirelessly from my laptop?

Yes. See wireless printing, below.
