BOOK APPRAISAL

SCL staff are not experts in rare books and we cannot provide book appraisals.

  1. For a general sense of the value of a book, check the used book website www.abebooks.com . Make sure you search with the publication date and/or edition information for your specific copy of the book.

  2. If you believe your book is valuable, you can proceed with having it professionally appraised. Many books (even older books) are not valuable enough to make this worthwhile. One local business that does appraise rare books (for a fee) is the Edmonton Book Store.

NEWSPAPERS ON MICROFILM – STRATHCONA COUNTY LIBRARY

The library has the following newspapers on microfilm:

Edmonton Journal: August 21, 1991 to December 31, 2003
Sherwood Park newspapers: 1963 to 1968  and  1971 – current

A complete list is located on top of the microfilm cabinet by the microfilm reader.

OBITUARIES - HOW TO FIND THEM

The Edmonton Public Library has excellent guidelines for finding Edmonton obituaries. For the Edmonton Journal, years 1989-2002, and 2004 to the present, obituaries from the Edmonton Journal can be found in Canadian Newsstand. The article type must be set to obituary, using this format:

AT(OBITUARY) AND SO(Edmonton Journal) AND name

Canadian Newsstand is only an index to obituaries--full text is not available. If you find out which issue of the newspaper an obituary appeared in, you can then access it either from the Edmonton Journal archives (contact the Journal Search department) or on microfilm at Edmonton Public Library.

For obituaries that appeared in the Sherwood Park News, inquire with the Sherwood Park News office directly. There is no electronic archive of this newspaper.
