Book Donations

The library accepts small donations (a box- or bag-full) of gently used books throughout the year.

We use our Collection Development policy to evaluate donated books, just as we would if we were deciding whether to purchase a book. We also consider other factors like duplication of existing titles, number of holds, and whether the format fits in our collection. If a donated item meets these criteria, it will be added to our collection.

If we decide not to add a donation to our collection, it will go into our Book Sale, with the proceeds benefiting the library. The revenue from our book sale helps us to purchase thousands of new books every year, to provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate materials available.

What To Donate?

We gratefully accept books that are: We do NOT accept:
  • Popular
  • Recently published
  • Hardcover or paperback
  • In good condition
  • Textbooks
  • Magazines (including National Geographics)
  • Books in poor condition (torn, faded, damaged, written-in/highlighted)
  • Encyclopedias
  • VHS Videotapes
Donating damaged, moldy, or very out-of-date books costs the library staff time and storage space. Rather than bringing these items to the library, please see our FAQs for Recycling -- Book Donations.

Tax Receipts

If a tax receipt is required, the donor must have had the items assessed by a recognized assessor, and supply the assessment with the donation of materials. Tax receipts are issued only for items deemed appropriate for inclusion in our collections. Tax receipts are NOT issued for items used in the Book Sale.

Large Donations

If you have a large number of books to donate (several boxes), we appreciate them around the time of our summer Book Sale (usually in August), but do not have the space to store them at other times of the year.

Please call us to discuss large donations before you bring them in, at (780) 410-8600.
